CI Facility Tour – Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola
Wednesday, April 16, 2014 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
The Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) at Angola, Louisiana is located in West Feliciana Parish. LSP consists of 18,000 acres of the finest farm land in the south. It is ideally situated for a prison as it is located in a rural area, surrounded on three sides by the mighty Mississippi River and bordered on the fourth side by the rugged Tunica Hills. LSP is the only institution in the state of Louisiana classified as a maximum security prison. Rather than a typical walled prison, LSP has six fenced housing areas and the remaining acreage is devoted to farming. LSP produces many crops for consumption by their offender population and four other state prisons. Formerly a Prison Enterprises program, the vegetable operation at LSP grows approximately 250 acres of vegetables which are served fresh or further processed. This operation helps to reduce overall food cost eliminating the need to purchase canned vegetables.
The primary crops on the “farm” which are grown and sold by Prison Enterprises are corn, soybeans and wheat. In addition to row crops, Prison Enterprises also maintains a beef herd of approximately 2,300 brood cows, 85 bulls and a horse herd of over 150 head which are used in daily farm operations and breeding. Prison Enterprises also raises Percheron/Warm Blooded cross horses for sale to police departments, including the New Orleans Police Department.
Prison Enterprises also houses many of its industrial operations at LSP which include a license plate manufacturing plant, silk screen shop, print shop, metal fabrication shop, and a mattress, broom and mop factory. Besides those industries Prison Enterprises also manages a canteen distribution center, tractor repair shop, flight bird operation, and the statewide transportation fleet is headquartered and managed at the LSP facility.
The Prison Enterprises industrial operations to be toured will include the Metal Fabrication Shop and the Mattress, Broom & Mop Factory. The Prison Enterprises agricultural operations to be seen will include the Rangeherd, Tractor Repair, and Flight Bird Operation. In addition to these operations managed by Prison Enterprises the tour will include LSP’s Percheron Barn to see the famous draft horses and also the historic “Red Hat” cellblock. The “Red Hat” was the first cell-block at LSP and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
