Michigan's Correctional Industries are re-tooling to manufacture PPE gear, which will then be distributed to employees and prisoners.“We want to be proactive, that's why we're going to be requiring that all prisoners and all staff around the state wear masks once we are able to produce those, and have those available at each facility for every staff and every prisoner to have three each.” (CLICK TO READ ARTICLE)

Washington state’s Department of Corrections is producing protective gowns to help fill the nationwide shortage for this necessary medical supply. The DOC’s Correctional Industries has developed an approved prototype. Once the gown production gets up to full speed and expands to other prisons, it’s estimated 5,000 to 6,000 gowns per day will be produced by 160 inmates and a dozen DOC staff members. Incarcerated individuals at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel are mixing isopropyl alcohol, glycerol, hydrogen peroxide and water in a 700-gallon polyethylene tank. Gov. Kim Reynolds pointed to the effort on how Iowa businesses are stepping up to help during the COVID-19 crisis. The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association said it plans to begin sending alcohol to the Iowa Department of Corrections for the manufacturing of hand sanitizer, now in short supply across the nation. Coyote Ridge Corrections Center textiles factory is typically producing 1,800 to 2,000 clothing garments a week. They are still making garments but now are producing over 500 protective gowns a day and have the hope of making 2,100 gowns a day. (CLICK TO READ FULL ARTICLE)

Iowa Corrections, through Iowa Prison Industries, has been asked to have inmates make hand sanitizer that could be provided to social workers and other state employees who still must interact with families as part of essential services around the state. Incarcerated Individuals at the Allen Oakwood Correctional Institute in Lima are manufacturing hospital gowns in an effort to combat a nationwide shortage of personal protective equipment. Miami Correctional Facility is making hand sanitizer, personal protection gowns, face masks and face shields. These are the supplies the state can't get enough of during the pandemic.
